Patterson’s girls softball  team  played a double-header against Carver  and on Friday, April 19 , 2013. Patterson lost the first game by a score of 17-5 but won the second game by forfeit.

Some of the players from Patterson who made important plays on offense  included Renee Ober, Malerie Bracey and Tuesday McIntyre. Sherkirra Bacote did a beautiful job as catcher, catching the ball with an out behind the plate–an extraordinary play. Renee Ober, Patterson’s pitcher, struck the other team out on many occasions.

During the second game, a player from Carver’s team was ejected from the game for throwing a bat, leaving his team without enough players. As a result of this incident, Carver was forced to forfeit the game, granting an automatic victory to Patterson.

The softball team practices daily outside–some days use the pitching machine, some days scrimmaging against each other. The team practices skills and drills daily. The players got involved in softball for a variety of reasons, including exercise, teamwork, camaraderie and just to learn the game.

The Patterson baseball team lost their first game of the season against Baltimore City College after school at Patterson on Friday March 29, 2013. The score was 13-5, City. Tical Montgomery and Sha’Quel Ramsey both scored during the game, while Jorge Ynfante led the defense from the pitcher’s mound. According to Coach Gagne, Patterson made too many mistakes on defense and did not score enough runs on offence.

During training and practice, the baseball players spend most of their time on basic fundamentals: catching, throwing, pitching, and hitting. Many of their players have never played in an organized baseball game before. They only had 3 weeks to prepare for the season.

Since the first game, Patterson has played 3 more games. Their most recent game was also their first victory as they defeated Mervo 17-9. “To be much better by the end of the season than they are right now, they need to help each other and take care of each other”, Coach Gagne commented.

For the third consecutive year, Patterson students have been learning swimming skills and training in preparation for the Special Olympics Summer Games.

Approximately ten students and even some staff members attend practices every Friday, including social worker Ms. Carole Menetrez, classroom teacher, Mr.Peralta and some classroom aides. The team travels by bus to Meadowbrook Swim Club where practices are held. The club is owned by Olympic gold-medalist and Maryland native, Michael Phelps. The Patterson students will join forces with other students in Baltimore for this exciting event. Students will have practiced throughout March, April and May and must participate in two qualifiers this spring. The event will be held on Saturday, April 27th at the Naval Academy.

Ms. Menetrez volunteered to organize a group of eager Patterson students, interested in swimming and willing to take a leap of faith and join Baltimore City’s Sharks Swim Team. Ms. Menetrez enjoys working with them and watching them master their skills as swimmers. Three students who are returning to this year’s swim team are Dominic Allen, Charles Collins and Jasmain Gilliam. They enjoy swimming because they say,”it’s fun”. Dominic reports,”It makes me relaxed and all the anger goes away when I get in the water”. Rodney Lee, who is a new swimmer this year, is enjoying getting in the water and reports he’s learning to swim. When returning swimmer, Quandra Horne, masters a new skill in the water, she likes to refer to the Baltimore Sharks Team Slogan: “I Know I Can”.

Congratulations to all the Patterson Students for showing their support for Patterson’s Swim Team.

By Tamika  Addison

The Patterson Wrestling team defeated NAF by a score of 36-24 on Thursday, Febuary 7th. The wrestling match was a home game and  started at 4:00 PM. Wrestling  is a very tough sport because it involves one on one combat. According to Coach Chris Jones, there are several different  reasons  why people decide  to join  wrestling . One reason is that wrestling helps you  to get stronger and tougher. Wrestling  is rewarding. You can get  into great shape and you learn discipline  and sacrifice, but you also have to work  hard. The last  wrestling match of the season will be held at Patterson on Wednesday,  Febuary 13th  against Poly.

Patterson Students Compete in State Bocce Championship

Bocce ball is a sport which originated in Italy, although many other nations play it as well. In bocce ball, sometimes called lawn bowling, players toss balls at a smaller target (the polinio), within the confines of a large court. The game is popular throughout Europe and in areas where there is a high concentration of Italian immigrants, including the United States.

This year Patterson High School had the opportunity to participate in its first ever bocce team. The bocce team had a superb first season. They had the opportunity to participate in the state championship in Hagerstown, Maryland.

The team worked its way through the brackets for a chance to play for the gold medal. The team played NAF another Baltimore City school in the Championship game for the gold. Patterson earned a silver medal, second place to represent Baltimore City Schools in the state of Maryland. This was an exciting first season. Thanks to the following team members for their hard work, dedication, and courage to step up and learn an unfamiliar sport at Patterson. Your courage is recognized and appreciated. Thanks for a great season, Roderick Greene, Xavia King, Denver Taylor and Toni Purcell!
