Homecoming pep rally inspires Patterson Pride

by Saniyah Courtney

The Patterson High School football field was full of joy and excitement as the students entered the field on October 10. Every class cohort came to support their teams and get hyped up for the Homecoming game.

The event began with a powerful Color Guard performance by JROTC, setting the tone for the Pep Rally while presenting during the playing of the National Anthem. Next up was the cross country team running down the track, followed by the girls football team, the JV football team, the varsity football team, and finally, the cheerleaders. The cheerleaders brought the crowd to life with their chants, dances, and cheers, showing off their hard work and spirit.

Students filled the bleachers and field, sitting with their cohorts and waving their cohort banners, posing for pictures and shouting for their class cohort while being asked what they like about their cohort, and which class cohort is the best. Lena Brown shared, “I like that my cohort gets along and they are laid-back. The best cohort is the Class of 2026 and Class of 2027.” Roman Clark proudly declared, “2027 is the best cohort because I like the colors and we are very confident.”

The day was packed with activities, including tug-of-war, rapping performances, cup challenges. dances, and even moments when ice buckets were thrown, making the crowd laugh and cheer.

Around the entrance of the field, students enjoyed sweet treats from the Kona Ice truck and other fundraiser snack tables. The Marines were also there with their pull-up bar, joining in the fun and supporting the students.

One of the biggest highlights of the pep rally was the announcement of the Homecoming King and Queen for the seniors, and Prince and Princess for the juniors, which were both celebrated with loud cheers and applause from their fellow students.

Students shared their thoughts about what they enjoyed from the event and what can be improved for next year’s pep rally.

Larry Escobar said, “I think today’s pep rally was fine, but it should have more activities so everyone could be a part of it.”

Myra Fortune added, “They did a really good job, but I feel like it could have been in the gym and we could have our phones.”

Ms. Masati, a teacher at Patterson, said, “My favorite sports team that came out was all of them because I love all my students.”

Zoe Harris also said, “I liked the cheerleaders because they did it the best and they showed off.”

The pep rally was more than just a school event. It was a day filled with laughter, teamwork, and pride. Each class showed their spirit, teachers and students came together, and everyone left smiling. It was a perfect way to celebrate Patterson pride and get ready for Homecoming, reminding everyone what it means to be a true Clipper.

The Patterson Clippers varsity football team defeated the Douglass Eagles by a score of 42-0 at Patterson’s Homecoming game on Saturday, October 21.

Even before the game began, the team was excited and determined to win. “ It’s our homecoming we’re not losing, everybody is here, the crowd is live, and it’s a good day to play football!”, declared #5 QB/WR/S Te-lin Cabean. Cabean also stated that this was his first homecoming game as a Clipper so he was looking to make a good impression.

The Clippers came into the game hot and rolling for their Homecoming game against Douglass High school. Everyone was there: fans, students, the band, and alumni. It was just a great experience. From the jump, Patterson had the momentum. The first two plays were head top catches by Cabean–1 being for about 40 yards, and the other for a 30 yard touchdown. Normally Cabean would be the Quarterback, but the Clippers made a big change to their offensive lineup, bringing in Sophomore #22 Donnell Richardson and moving Cabean to Wide Receiver.

The Clippers began to pour it on, adding more touchdowns by Richardson and #1 Kevin Evans, and also big plays by #84 E’Montae Austin and #52 Machi Thompson. They kept adding points to the scoreboard with back to back fumbles and touchdowns. Finally, the beating was over with Patterson taking the 42-0 Homecoming win.

After the game it was a good scene: the fans were hyped, the players were hyped, and it was just a great day to be a Clipper. It was also Senior Night, so all of the seniors were congratulated with a poster and pictures with the team and family. After the game, the new quarterback, Donnell Richardson, said, “ We just looked to have fun and play hard for our Homecoming and come out with a win, and that’s what we did. And we look to prepare for a great Mervo team at home next week”.

Students and staff showcase their fashion creativity on Spirit Week

Spirit Week is held every year, once a year. It is a Patterson tradition where we can express ourselves, having fun by dressing up and being silly. This year Spirit Week happened on the week of October 7-11.

Usually Spirit Week is held on the week of Homecoming. However, this year was an exception. According to Ed Associate and Senior Class Advisor Mrs. Blankenfeld, Spirit Week was scheduled for the week before Homecoming week because there were SATs and PSATs during the week of Homecoming.

Each day during Sprit Week students and staff dressed according to different themes; Monday’s theme was “Dynamic Duos”, Tuesday’s was “Student/Teacher”, Wednesday’s was “Holiday Spirit”, Thursday’s was “Anything But a Backpack”, and Friday was “Cohort Colors”.

Mrs. Blankenfeld helped with Spirit Week but she wasn’t the one who came up with the idea. “Ms. Myrick, Mr. Sankofa, Jazzy [Blessett] and Coach Blum made Spirit Week”, Mrs. Blankenfeld explained. These were four of the people who were in the meeting that came up with the themes and Spirit Week itself. Since she wasn’t in the meeting she only knew a little about the planning process.

The fun on Friday didn’t end with wearing cohort colors; there was a pep rally in the afternoon followed immediately by a soccer game. Then there was a Homecoming dance on October 17th and a parade and Homecoming football game on Saturday, the19th.

Patterson High School held a Homecoming dance inside the school’s gymnasium, on Friday, October 20, 2023 from 7:00-11:00 PM. This year’s dance had a theme advertised on posters as a “sneaker ball” where people wear their best suits and dresses but with their best pairs of sneakers.

On the night of the dance, the girls wore long colorful dresses with some ignoring the theme and wearing nice heels to match, while the boys wore suits with ties and some wore polo shirts and jeans.

During the dance, the gym was kept dark with funky neon lights flashing all around. Music was blasted throughout the gym, featuring songs like Deli by Ice Spice and Back End by Finesse2tymes, with people forming dance circles and hyping themselves up. There was even a photo booth in the corner.

“It was good. We had tons of space to walk around and dance.”, said Henry Lewis, a student who participated in the dance.

Food was offered to the students with options like meatballs, pigs in a blanket, etc. They also served fruit and cookies as desserts with drink options like water and sodas. Most students did not express strong feelings one way or the other about the food, but some students complained about having to eat standing up.

“Where was the tables? Where was the chairs?” asked student Andre Green.

Despite this small complaint, it was clear that most students enjoyed themselves quite a bit. Overall, the 2023 Homecoming Dance was a big success. It was a Friday night that most attendees will never forget.

Students and staff show their Patterson Pride during Spirit Week

By Kylayah Davis

Every year, on the week of Homecoming, we have Spirit Week, where the student body shows their school spirit for the upcoming football game, and this year at Patterson High School the Clippers really showed their school spirit!

This school year, Spirit Week took place on the week of October 16. The first day of Spirit Week was “Manic Monday”, where you dress up in your sports paraphernalia. While most students committed to wearing sports clothes, others took a different approach and wore hospital gowns to truly be manic.

Our beloved hall monitor Mr. Walker, affectionately known as “Snitch”, is considered by many to be our school’s most manic sports fan, as his everyday attire shows his support for the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles.

On Tuesday, it was Celebrity/Decades Day and there were a variety of outfits on this day. Students and staff wore outfits from the 80’s and 90’s or dressed as Chris Brown and other celebrities.

Wednesday was “Wacky Tacky” day where, as the name suggests, you dress in your wackiest, tackiest clothes.

Thursday was Class Colors day and each cohort wore their colors:

  • Class of 2024: Red & white
  • Class of 2025: Green and gold
  • Class of 2026: Maroon and gold
  • Class of 2027: Green and white

Friday was our pep rally, which took place in the football stadium and was attended by the entire school, and a Homecoming dance where the theme was “Sneaker Ball”.

All of these festivities were to prepare for our Homecoming football game on Saturday, October 21.
